Blasting into Monday with the ultimate Kobold—the tactical Seal! This is one of the rarest Kobold watches ever made, but it’s the unique handset that truly steals the show. As a massive fan of the Kobold Seal line (my absolute favorite models), I’ve owned two others before this. Safe to say, these tactical hands make this the ultimate Seal for me. ⌚️
The real surprise? I’m actually keeping it on the bracelet! I might swap it out down the road, but for now, it stays. That matte blasted finish is absolutely killer.

I don’t know why, but I’ve been on a major DLC kick lately. I’m incredibly happy to have snagged the stainless steel version with the notched caseback. It offers a great contrast to my upcoming SeL Xos, which will be DLC but in grade 5 titanium. While this Seal features a beautifully simple dial, the Xos will definitely be busier.
For me, the Hive is all about balance. My ultimate goal for the collection is the MK1, the Xos, my 1:1 SeL, the Chronoswiss, and this Kobold. I plan to add one more SeL next year, and then the Hive will finally be complete. The chase is officially over, and the constant flipping and selling is done. It is such a great feeling to be at peace with the collection.

I will still be bringing watches in to review. I was thinking about this too. I am going to put a package together at the end of the year and do a giveaway. There will be watches, straps and some other goodies thrown in there. I want to ask you this? Should I do little giveaways for each of the 12 days leading up to X-mas or one big giveaway? Let me know in the comments below which you prefer!

This badass watch comes equipped with a literal secret weapon: the SAS. What exactly is the SAS? Let me break it down. The Secondary Shock Absorption System is a patented, specialized engineering technology integrated directly into the watch case. It acts as a heavy-duty backup armor system. Designed specifically to protect the automatic movement against extreme, violent impacts, it works in perfect tandem with the movement’s standard Incabloc shock protection.

I absolutely love that philosophy of engineering. This is the definition of a true tool watch. When people ask what actually separates a real utility watch from a standard dress piece, the hidden engineering inside this Seal is the definitive answer. Just because a brand markets a watch as a “tool” doesn’t mean it has the technical backbone to support the claim. The same goes for enthusiasts in the watch community who casually label basic sports watches as tools. A label doesn’t mean a thing without the engineering to back it up.

What sets the SAS apart is its seamless case integration. While traditional shock absorbers are delicate components nestled directly inside the movement, the SAS is built into the watch case itself to provide a structural line of defense. Because Kobold builds gear meant for serious field deployment, they engineered the SAS specifically to survive the high-impact, unforgiving environments faced by tactical operators, professional divers, and extreme outdoor adventurers.

While I love how the SAS shields the movement from violent impacts, there is another engineering detail that takes my appreciation for this watch to the next level. Kobold equipped the Seal Tactical with a soft-iron inner case. This integration doesn’t just add a structural layer of shock resistance—it introduces a formidable shield against magnetic fields. These are the exact kinds of purposeful, high-level engineering details that make me gravitate toward a timepiece.

🚨Remember kids, all watches are timing tools but not all watches are tool watches! 🚨

After discussing the strengths of the Kobold Seal last week, I want to highlight two areas where it could be improved. Unfortunately for every other watch in my collection, SeL has completely ruined rotating bezels for me. The Kobold Seal relies on a traditional click-spring bezel—similar to Rolex, Tudor, and countless other brands. Personally, I would actually prefer a fixed bezel here, as 60-click setups always feel a bit wonky to me anyway. The second area for improvement is the crown. A slightly larger crown would greatly improve grip and operation, while adding more threads to the crown system would elevate its overall function.

Obviously, those areas aren’t dealbreakers for me, and they certainly don’t change my deep appreciation for this watch. Every timepiece has elements that could be improved based on our own subjective preferences. For instance, I find Rolex bezels lacking in terms of function, alignment, and fit, yet countless owners never see an issue with them. In comparison, SeL engineers an incredible bezel; if I know I have a day ahead that demands a precision instrument, I am reaching for the SeL. But for casual, everyday use, the Kobold Seal gets the job done perfectly.

The classic Kobold lugs are absolutely flawless and easily rank among my favorite design details across all of Kobold’s watches. I love their bold aesthetic, but I appreciate their functional utility even more—specifically the drilled holes paired with solid screw bars. The compact, chunky case architecture is perfection. Turning to the non-crown side of the case at 9 o’clock position , the functional execution shines through brilliantly with the integration of the gas escape valve.

Aesthetically, I really love the unique 10 o’clock positioning of the helium escape valve, and that solid caseback featuring the engraved Seal is the absolute icing on the cake. The bracelet serves as a fantastic throwback to my early days collecting microbrands over 20 years ago. It’s highly fitting, considering Kobold was one of the earliest and most influential pioneers of the modern microbrand movement. Founded in 1998, they were way ahead of their time, pioneering the direct-to-consumer internet sales model and global outsourcing—the exact elements that define today’s microbrand watch market.

The “moody, moist, mossy mornings” series has officially commenced! The Kobold Seal remains one of my absolute favorite tool watches of all time. I love that legends like Gerd R. Lang, Helmut Sinn, and Sir Ranulph Fiennes all lent their expertise to help shape Kobold into what it is today. Having three absolute masters of their respective crafts involved is incredible, but the input from Sir Ranulph Fiennes—the world’s greatest living explorer—was truly invaluable. As the first man to complete a north-south surface circumnavigation of the globe, he knows firsthand exactly how critical reliable engineering and dependable gear are when everything is on the line.

The matte black dial is absolutely stunning, completely hitting my sweet spot. I’m not a fan of glossy, mother-of-pearl, or sunburst dials—give me a matte finish every single time. This ultra-clean layout optimizes legibility, and the powerful lume ensures it stays just as readable in low-light environments. But the real star here is the handset. This glorious set of hands immediately reminds me of the Kobold Cousteau I used to own. I’ve never seen a standard Seal—let alone a rare Tactical Seal—with this specific handset, and it’s the exact reason I hunted this watch down. The subtle pops of color add the perfect amount of depth, with the red, gray, and white elements working together flawlessly. Even the date window is executed perfectly; when it’s integrated this cleanly, I actually welcome it.

The bracelet is still on the watch, and I am honestly loving it for two distinct reasons. First, it’s a brilliant throwback to the late ’90s and early 2000s microbrand era. Since Kobold was a true pioneer of the microbrand movement, it makes perfect sense that this steel gives off those nostalgic yesteryear vibes. Second, I love how this bracelet is aging. While most bracelets lack personality, this one is developing incredible character—aging like a fine wine and showing the kind of unique charm you usually only get from custom leather straps.

Prepping for Monday’s battles with the Kobold Tactical Seal on my wrist. This timepiece firmly holds a spot on my all-time top 5 favorite tool watches. Kobold is an iconic name in the industry, standing tall as one of the original microbrands that helped pave the way for countless companies today. Over the years, the brand has been backed by some truly badass ambassadors, with Sir Ranulph Fiennes being my absolute favorite. After all, it’s hard to compete with the world’s greatest living explorer.

Another detail I appreciate about Kobold is how frequently their watches appear in movies. While it doesn’t change how the watch performs, it’s undeniably cool to see on screen. Because the Tactical Seal has the heavy-duty engineering to back up its rugged reputation, its cinematic track record is just an added bonus of coolness.

I’ve really been enjoying Kobold’s recent social media posts—yesterday’s was particularly great, so definitely check it out if you haven’t yet. It is no secret that Kobold has had its fair share of ups and downs over the years, but I truly hope they can make a successful comeback. I have been a loyal fan since day one. While I have owned and tested several of their awesome models, the Seal remains my absolute favorite—especially this exact execution.

Why do I love this model so much? The Seal is an absolute icon, and its SAS engineering truly solidifies its status as a genuine tool watch. Aesthetically, it is a masterclass in cohesion—the handset, markers, bezel, and case all work together flawlessly. While we all know that SeL sits at the absolute peak of tool watch engineering, Kobold and UTS easily dominate the tier right below them. I am incredibly grateful to add this Seal to the hive.
